Since ancient times, rubies have been considered one of the most precious gemstones. They are sought after for their beauty and vibrant red color. Ruby is a variety of the mineral conundrum, which is one of the hardest minerals on Earth.

  1. Physical Properties

    • The ruby ranks a 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale for hardness, second only to the diamond at 10. Rubies that are more than 3 carats are very rare.

    Geography

    • Rubies are found in many locations including Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kenya and Tanzania. They may vary in hue and intensity from deep, vivid red to a more pale, bluish color.

    Metaphysical Properties

    • Ancient druids, shamans and Hindus believed in the mystical properties of the ruby and other gemstones. Many of those beliefs were passed on and still exist in modern times. The ruby is believed to promote clarity, wisdom and motivation. It is thought that carrying or wearing a ruby will protect the owner from psychic and physical attacks, and that sleeping with a ruby can induce lucid dreaming.

    Healing Properties

    • The Romans and Greeks utilized gemstones for their healing abilities. It is believed that rubies can promote healthy blood circulation and protect from infection. Rubies are thought to cleanse the blood of toxins. The gemstone is even credited with preventing starvation.

    Magical Properties

    • Since ancient times pagan cultures believed in the magic inherent in gemstones. Even in modern times, some practitioners of Wicca use gemstones in spells and believe that wearing a ruby can increase energies during a magical ritual. Magical properties associated with the ruby include protection, power and wealth. Rubies also are used to ward off nightmares.
