The South Beach Diet is a diet plan that can be found outlined in a best-selling book that also includes a long term nutritional plan. The basis for the diet encourages the intake of nourishing fats but avoids unhealthy ones and promotes low-sugar carbohydrates.

    History

  1. The South Beach Diet was designed in the 1980s by Arthur Agatston, a cardiologist looking for a means of preventing heart disease.
  2. Time Frame

  3. The South Beach Diet is broken up into three phases. The first phase lasts two weeks, prohibits carbohydrates and alcohol, and limits the consumptions of dairy products. The second phase presents the banned food back into the diet at regulated portions until the desired weight is attained. The third phase is meant to be the dieter's plan for life.
  4. Types

  5. The types of foods that should be avoided and are dissuaded while on the South Beach Diet include rice, potatoes, pasta, carrots, corn, cereal and beets.
  6. Considerations

  7. The first phase of the South Beach Diet takes care to cut out carbohydrates because they get digested quickly, resulting in a cycle where the body then continues to crave more food.
  8. Benefits

  9. The South Beach Diet does not put a restriction on portion sizes or leave out any food groups, allowing the dieter to feel satisfied after eating and snacking with healthy foods.
