Requirements to Get a College Football Scholarship

Beyond being a talented football player, there are several steps needed to become eligible for a college football scholarship.

  1. Ability

    • College football scholarships are reserved for the most talented players at the high school level.

    Academics

    • In order to receive a college football scholarship, you need to meet the school's academic requirements. These vary by governing body, although the NCAA requires at minimum a 2.0 grade-point average in high school and passing marks on the ACT or SAT tests, generally higher than 800 on the SAT.

    Self-Marketing

    • Sometimes being a good athlete and student isn't enough. High school football players will occasionally have to reach out to football coaches or recruiters and make them aware of the interest in their school. One way to do this is to send a DVD of individual highlights to the program.

    Walking On

    • Occasionally, high school football players may walk-on to a program and receive a scholarship after a season of non-scholarship play.

    Recruiting Services

    • High school football players who wish to play at the college level can register with an online recruiting service to help promote themselves to colleges.
