Hospital Volunteer Duties

A hospital volunteer is often known as a candy striper. Hospitals have a minimum age for candy stripers due to the duties that a volunteer performs. The volunteer may lift heavy objects or perform clerical and administrative duties. Pursuing a job as a candy striper also teaches adolescents about the job application process. For older adults, it is a way to give back to the community while also staying productive.

  1. Hours worked

    • Candy stripers usually work part-time. However, the candy striper can usually work as many or as as few hours as he would like.

    Deliveries

    • Mail, flowers and other deliveries are often performed by candy stripers. This requires knowledge of the various hospital wings and departments.

    Assisting Nurses

    • Nurses often need help moving patients and getting supplies for patients. The volunteer may be required to assist with lifting a patient or picking up medical items from the supply department.

    Assisting Patients

    • Nurses cannot be everywhere. A patient may need a cup of ice, water or help eating a meal. The volunteer is expected to help with these duties.

    Gift Shop Sales

    • Candy stripers often staff the hospital gift shop, managing sales and inventory.
