Chameleon Habitats
Chameleons are small lizards that can change the color of their skin to blend in with their environment. There are over 135 species of chameleon, divided into six genus groups. They live in the warm regions of Africa and neighboring islands like Madagascar on the forest floor, in the trees and bushes.

Black-Headed Dwarf Chameleon

These chameleons (Bradypodian melanocephalum) live in the dry forest regions of South Africa and southern Mozambique. They can be found among the reed stalks, trees, grass and bushes of the Cape and Natal regions.
Dead Leaf Chameleon

These chameleons (Brookesia stumpffi) are found amongst the dead leaf litter and rotting tree stumps of northwestern Madagascar and Nosy Be Island. They spend the majority of their time camouflaged amongst the dead leaves along the forest floor.

Hooded Chameleon

Hooded chameleons (Calumma cucullata) live in the Malagasy Forest, located on the island of Madagascar. They are found in the bushes and trees in the northeast portion of the forest.
Smooth Chameleon

The smooth chameleon (Chamaeleo laevigatus) lives in the savannas (dry grasslands) of East Africa, from Rwanda to Sudan.
Carpet Chameleon

These chameleons (Furcifer lateralis) live in the wet grasslands, dry forests, humid forests and farm fields of Madagascar. They can be found throughout the island except for the north and northwest portions of the country.
Spectral Pygmy Chameleon

Spectral pygmy chameleons (Rhampholeon spectrum) inhabit equatorial Africa. They range from western Kenya to Fernando Poo Island to Tanzania. They can be found in the leaf beds of the dry forest and rainforest floor.
