EKG Monitor Tech Duties
Electrocardiograph technicians, or EKG monitor technicians, are responsible for tracking electrical impulses of patients' hearts for diagnostic purposes and during hospital stays. These technicians usually are trained on the job after working in another health care position.
-
Initial Duties
-
EKG monitor techs attach electrodes to the patient's chest, arms and legs to obtain readings of the heart's electrical activity. The data is printed on grid paper for the doctor to review.
Stress Test
-
During a treadmill stress test, EKG monitor techs first take a baseline reading, then track the patient's cardiac performance while he walks on a treadmill.
-
Observation
-
Some EKG technicians continually observe monitors, interpreting data and noting any changes in heart rhythm. This may be done remotely for some patients, such as those with new pacemakersor wear a portable EKG for at least 24 hours. The techs report any problems to a registered nurse or a doctor.
Equipment Maintenance
-
EKG monitor techs also evaluate and maintain equipment, make minor repairs and report equipment malfunctions that require major repair or replacement.
Administrative Duties
-
In some facilities, the EKG monitor tech also has administrative duties including doing data entry and acting as receptionist.
