The Safest SUV

Safety is a big concern for many people purchasing SUVs. A higher center of gravity means SUVs are more prone to roll over than a regular car, according to the federal government.

  1. What They Test

    • According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, it tries to determine how well a vehicle will protect its occupants during a crash. This includes front-crash tests done at 40 mph, side-crash tests, and evaluations of seat and head restraints. The institute says frontal tests can only be compared between vehicles of similar weight.

    Large SUV

    • According to the institute, the large SUV that did the best on the tests is the Audi Q7 2009 model with standard airbags but without additional optional-side airbags.

    Midsize SUV

    • The highest-ranked midsize SUV was the Honda Pilot 2009 model with standard-side airbags.

    Midsize Luxury SUV

    • The Acura MDX 2009 model with standard-side airbags placed first in this category.

    Small SUV

    • The Volkswagen Tiguan 2009 with standard but without additional optional-side airbags came in first.

    Additional Factor

    • The Institute did not include roof strength tests in the rankings but plans to include them in the future. Four small SUVs earned good roof strength ratings: The Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Honda Element and Jeep Patriot.
