Low Carb Dieting While Breastfeeding

The idea of low-carb dieting while breastfeeding is one that has been addressed all too often lately in dieting circles. In the age of people who want to look thin, some forget the many needs the body has for energy and nutrition.

  1. Carbs Equal Calories

    • When you are trying to lose weight after a pregnancy, you must take into account all that is going on. You are taking care of a new baby, you are breastfeeding this baby and possibly you are fighting off an infection. These things require energy. Carbs are energy.

    Too Much Weight Loss

    • Women who start low-carb diets while breastfeeding have been shown to lose too much too fast and are often left feeling weak and tired. Ketosis can occur. Ketosis is a technical way of saying you are overworking your liver, which can be dangerous.

    Atkins Suggests

    • Women who have just given birth and are breastfeeding should take in carbs at a "maintenance" level, which is much higher than their typical "weight loss" levels. This is basically for the same reasons mentioned above.

    Protein

    • Don't neglect the protein, either. Your growing baby needs all the protein he can get in the formative first months after birth. In a low-carbohydrate diet, this could possibly give the child not enough of the energy he needs to use the protein you are giving him.

    Diet For You

    • Always consult your physician before undertaking any kind of diet, especially after giving birth and while breastfeeding. If the physician has been familiar with your body, she will be able to give you the proper advice that will make your weight loss healthy for you and your baby.
