Interesting Places in Malacca

Malacca is a historical state in Malaysia, located in the southern part of the country on the Straits of Malacca. The state has been influenced by a number of different groups, including the British, Chinese, Dutch and Portuguese. There are a number of interesting places in Malacca, including temples, mosques, churches, memorials, mausoleums, light houses and forts.

  1. Temples, Mosques and Churches

    • Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is a Chinese Buddhist temple in Jalan To'kong that was started in the 1600s. Kampung Kling Mosque, also known as the Masjid Kampong Kling, was built in 1748 and is located in Malacca's Chinese district. St. Peter's Church is a Catholic church that was built in 1710 by descendents of Portuguese soldiers.

    Museums and Memorials

    • Located in Jalan Kota, the Sungai Ujong War Memorial was built in commemoration of soldiers that died during the resistance against the British during the colonial period.

    Mausoleums

    • Hang Tuah's Mausoleum was built in Jalan Klebang for Hang Tuah, who commanded Melacca's naval forces during the reign of Sultan Mahmud Shah. Tun Teja's Mausoleum was built in Jalan Merlimau for the queen of Merlimau and the wife of Sultan Mahmud Shah.

    Lighthouses

    • Cape Rachado Lighthouse, also known as Rumah Api Tanjung Tuan, was built near Port Dickson between 1528 and 1529 by the Portuguese.

    Forts

    • Located in Teluk Gedung, the Dutch Fort was established in 1670 as a way to block the British from Perak, a major producer of tin, and to keep English settlers from monopolizing trade in the Pangkor region as well.
