Odd Baseball Rules
Baseball is a game of many rules and even the most enthusiastic fans can see things they have never seen before during any given game. Here are some odd baseball rules you may not be aware of.
-
The Ground Rule Triple
-
If a fielder intentionally touches a live ball with his hat or mask, or throws his glove at and hits a batted ball, the batter is awarded third base.
The Traded Base Runner
-
What happens if a game is suspended while a runner is on base, then that player is traded before the makeup game? Another player can take his place on base without being used as a pinch runner.
-
The Incomplete Game Shutout
-
In order for a pitcher to get credited with a shutout, he does not have to throw a complete game. A pitcher can still get credited with a shutout by relieving the starter in the first inning with nobody out and keeping the other team from scoring for nine innings.
The Pitchers Drops the Ball
-
When a batter is in the batter's box and there are runners on base, the pitcher cannot drop the ball while standing on the pitching rubber. If he does so, it is a balk and all the runners move up one base.
The Substitute Runner
-
It is possible for a player to enter the game as a pinch runner in the middle of a play. If a player is injured in the middle of a play in which he is entitled to a certain base and cannot reach the destination base, a substitute can enter the game and complete the play.
