A resume can get your foot in the door for a job interview, or it can get the door slammed in your face before you begin. Strong resumes contain key pieces of information presented clearly and concisely, to make the most of your skills and strengths.
The top of the resume should include your contact information: name, address, phone number and email address.
State your objective in finding a position, such as: Seeking a software sales position. Career counselors say make this line specific, not general.
List jobs in reverse chronological order, following this format:
From June 2009-Present: My Current Company, My Current Job Title.
Under each job heading, list brief descriptions of your responsibilities and achievements. Begin each description with a strong action verb.
List specific examples of job-related skills and awards:
Created program to track sales leads at my current company
Named top company producer, January 2009
Fluent with Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Give specific details regarding your education: the degree you received, the name of the college and the year you graduated. Example:
Bachelor of Business Administration, Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., 2007
List the names, titles, company names and phone numbers of three people. Add more on another page if the employer requests it.
