Medium Length Hair Cut Ideas

Medium-length hair is ideal for many people with fine or thin hair, as well as those who don't want the hassle of taking care of long hair or who want to create an "updo" or pull their hair back in a ponytail. Many medium hairstyles are versatile, stylish and easy to correct if the style doesn't flatter your facial shape. To make sure the style is right from the get-go, however, consult your stylist and choose a cut that suits your face.

Round Face Shapes

Medium, chin-length hairstyles work best for rounded face shapes. Go with a cut that falls in layers around the chin.

Square Face Shapes

Select a textured cut that falls near the shoulders to play down the angular jaw of this facial shape. Curls and choppy ends are good, but one-length bobs can accentuate squareness.

Oval Face Shapes

Oval-shaped faces are probably the most versatile, and provide many options for medium hairstyles. Oval faces look perfect with straight or curly hair, while layers can add volume.

Oblong Face Shape

Long face shapes are tricky; above all, avoid shapes that drag the face down visually. Bobs that fall anywhere between the chin and shoulders should be fine; add bangs that skim the brows.

Heart Face Shape

Draw the focal point to the eyes with a cut along the jawline, teamed with a strong off-centered part. Side-swept bangs also help deflect attention from a pointy chin.
