Surgical Technician Job Description

Surgical technicians, also called surgical technologists, scrubs or operating room technicians, work primarily in the operating room and assist other members of the surgical team during an operation. They typically work under the supervision of senior members of the team, such as surgeons or registered nurses.

  1. Function

    • The main responsibility of a surgical technician is to assist the surgeon during an operation. Other duties may include getting the operating room ready for surgery and removing supplies and equipment when the procedure is finished.

    Where They Work

    • Most surgical technicians work in hospitals, but many work in doctor's offices and other health care facilities where surgical procedures are performed.

    Duties Before Surgery

    • Prior to an operation, duties of a surgical technician include setting up surgical equipment, instruments and sterile supplies and making sure the equipment works properly. They may also help get patients ready for surgery by shaving, washing and disinfecting incision areas. Technicians often transfer patients to the operating room and help position them on the operating table.

    Duties During Surgery

    • During surgery, surgical technicians pass instruments and sterile supplies to the surgeon and surgical assistants. They may help keep track of needles, sponges, instruments and supplies, cut sutures and hold retractors. Technicians also assist in taking and caring for specimens taken for analysis.

    Duties After Surgery

    • After surgery, surgical techs help transport patients to the recovery area, clean the operatng room and restock it with supplies.
