Erectile dysfunction may also be referred to as impotence. This condition is common and treatable. Erectile dysfunction can be treated by a family doctor. Erectile dysfunction occurs more often as men age, but by the age of 40 many men have already encountered this problem.

Identification

Erectile dysfunction is a condition characterized by the inability to either achieve or maintain an erection.

Significance

By the age of 40, about 40 percent of all men will be affected by erectile dysfunction. The prevalence of the condition increases with age and by age 70 almost 70 percent of all men experience erectile dysfunction.

Time Frame

Erectile dysfunction is typically diagnosed when a man has sexual difficulties for a duration of three months or longer.

Considerations

In addition to increasing age, other factors increase the risk of erectile dysfunction. Men who have diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure are more likely to experience erectile dysfunction at an earlier age. Also, some medications, such as antidepressants, may cause erectile dysfunction.

Treatments

Erectile dysfunction may be treated with oral medications such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis. If you cannot take these medications or if they are not successful, a penis pump or penile implant may be an option.
