Dental Tools for Dogs

Dogs need regular teeth cleanings to prevent harmful diseases like gingivitis and plaque build-up. You can purchase all you need to clean your dog's teeth and keep her breath fresh.

  1. Toothbrush

    • Toothbrushes for dogs can be handheld or electric, but differ from those for people by a design that makes it easier to reach all of a dog's teeth. They can be found at department, grocery or pet stores.

    Toothpaste

    • Make sure you buy toothpaste made specifically for dogs. It is available in paste, liquid, gel and spray. The biggest difference between it and toothpaste for people is that it is digestible.

    Treats

    • Dog treats are a great way to improve your dog's breath. Biscuits, mints and bones come in flavors that promote fresh breath and dental health. These treats have active ingredients that fight bacteria and plaque.

    Chew Toys

    • Tug toys made of rope are good dental tools because the string works as floss. As the tug toy is chewed, the strings dig deep between your dog's teeth.

    Diet

    • Some brands of dog food, such as Science Diet, Purina and Iams, offer food formulated to improve the dental health of your dog. These diets have special ingredients that fight plaque.
