Where to Find the SSID on My PSP

With millions in unit sales, Sony's PSP is an extremely popular handheld gaming platform. Much of its popularity is due to the user's ability to play games and network with others online. This online functionality is facilitated through the use of a SSID.

  1. Locate

    • The easiest method in which to find a SSID on a PSP is to select "Settings" on the PSP (the icon looks like a small briefcase). Then choose "Network Settings," "Infrastructure Mode," "New Connection," then "Scan." The PSP will scan for access points and display which ones are available (if any). Once a SSID is selected, the user can continue the set-up process.

    Warning

    • If no SSIDs are displayed, check the settings for the access point. Some routers or access points will need to be set manually to "broadcast" the wireless signal. It also might be necessary to contact the manufacturer or a system administrator. Public access points are usually set automatically.

    Function

    • SSID stands for "Service Set Identifier." A SSID allows users to identify available wireless local area networks (LAN) or access points (WAP). When using the PSP, the SSID can be set automatically, entered manually or scanned for by the PSP depending on the user's preference.

    Benefits

    • Knowing how to find a SSID on your PSP will allow you to access online features both at home and away (where supported). Having online access also provides access to the PlayStation store for getting additional games available as "download only" such as Patapon 2.

    Expert Insight

    • The Sony PSP User manual states that: "depending on the access point settings, you may need to enter the system's MAC address to connect to a network. The system's MAC address can be checked under (Settings) > (System Settings) > (System Information)."
