What to Look for in Baby High Chairs
Most caregivers think carefully before choosing new equipment for their babies. The two most used pieces of baby furniture are the bed or crib and the highchair. Several factors are important when choosing a new highchair.
-
Harness
-
A safe highchair should have a five-point harness system. This type of harness has straps that go over the shoulders and across the legs. A middle strap between the legs then fastens them all together.
Recline Options
-
The best highchairs will have the ability to recline. This is helpful because the highchair can be used for young babies who are just beginning to eat solids but not yet sitting proficiently. As the baby grows, the chair can be put in a more upright position.
-
Easy-To-Clean Surface
-
Highchairs are going to get messy multiple times every day. Choose a chair with a pad made of a material such as vinyl that can be easily cleaned. The frame of the highchair can be metal, wood or plastic; however, plastic is the easiest to clean.
Removable Tray
-
The tray portion of the highchair often collects the bulk of the mess, so a removable tray than can be washed in the sink or dishwasher is preferable.
Durability and Sturdiness
-
Parents also need to consider durability and sturdiness when picking a highchair. Since it will be used for about two years, it will need to last a while. Plus, it may be used for subsequent children. Sturdiness is also important. Highchairs with a wide base are less likely to tip over.
