Dog Medications for Pain
If your dog is experiencing pain due to injury, arthritis, illness or surgery, pain relievers can quickly and effectively control its symptoms. Prescription, OTC and herbal pain relievers can reduce swelling and inflammation, improve mobility, speed recovery from surgery and improve your dog's quality of life.
-
NSAIDs
-
Prescription strength anti-inflammatories such as Rimadyl and Deramaxx control swelling and reduce the pain of arthritis. Blood tests are required to determine if your pet is a suitable candidate for NSAIDs.
Narcotics
-
Used for severe pain associated with surgical procedures or cancer, narcotics such as morphine and Fentanyl are habit-forming. These drugs should be used under strict veterinary supervision.
-
Tramadol
-
Tramadol (Ultram) is a powerful painkiller that is similar in function to morphine and other narcotics. Unlike narcotics, Tramadol is non-addictive.
OTC Pain Relievers
-
Aspirin can be given to dogs at dosage of 10 mg per pound of body weight. Buffered aspirin is best. Avoid "headache remedy" aspirins that contain caffeine.
Herbal Pain Relievers
-
Feverfew and licorice are anti-inflammatories that can alleviate arthritic pain. Cayenne contains ingredients that block pain and skullcap is useful for treating nerve pain.
Cautions
-
Be aware of any side effects that are associated with the pain reliever that you administer to your dog. Never give canine prescription pain relievers to cats.
