Temporary Relief of Pinworms in Children

Temporary relief from pinworm infection symptoms involves many of the same basic treatments your grandmother would advise. Most suggestions are based upon improving cleanliness and soothing the rectal area.

  1. Soak

    • Soak the affected area in a bath of oatmeal to help alleviate itching and irritation. The soak should be followed by a shower to minimize the transfer of eggs from skin to skin contact or via linens.

    Moist Cloth

    • Place a moist cloth on the area to help relieve irritation. Wiping with a moist cloth can remove dead worms and fresh eggs that may be causing irritation, but the cloth should not be used by other family members as it may carry viable eggs.

    Cream

    • Apply an itch-relieving cream to the area. A cream or ointment such as Lanacaine (one which also contains a topical anesthetic or is formulated for the rectal area) may stop the itch and the urge to scratch, plus help with discomfort.

    Clean Underwear

    • Fresh linens and a regular change of underpants can help prevent the spread of eggs and make the affected person feel better mentally and physically. Change undergarments twice a day, especially when using a cream or ointment.

    Wash

    • Wash in the morning to remove freshly laid eggs. Pay special attention to the skin of the buttocks and anus, and use a separate cloth for those areas to prevent spreading eggs to other locations.
