Side Effects of IVF Treatment
In vitro fertilization treatments include medication that is supposed to stimulate the ovaries and make conception more likely. As exciting as the process may be, there are some possible adverse and unwelcome side effects some women may experience when going through IVF treatments.
-
Injection Site Side Effects
-
Some IVF drugs are given by injection and may cause side effects such as bruising at the site, being sore where the injection was given and possibly allergic reactions, which may include itching and redness.
Headaches
-
Some women may experience headaches while taking IVF treatments. Mood swings also are common.

Ovarian Problems
-
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a potentially severe medical problem that can be a side effect of IVF and involves ovary enlargement. Symptoms may include pain in the pelvic area, vomiting, nausea, less urine, gaining weight and breathing problems. These symptoms may result in veins being inflamed, having a stroke and blood clots.
Mental and Emotional
-
Some women experience psychological stress as a side effect of IVF treatments.
Pregnancy
-
Though normal pregnancy is the desired result of IVF, occasionally there may be a side effect of an ectopic pregnancy. This would result in losing the pregnancy and possibly a fallopian tube.
