Book Organizing Ideas

Most people have books in their homes or offices, and avid readers may own hundreds of titles, keeping some on shelves, bedside tables or near couches. To find the book you want when it's needed to read, re-read or loan, book organization is a must. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types of Organization

    • To save time when trying to find a particular book, arrange books by genre, location, size, height, style, color or dimensions.

    Genre

    • Place books with similar content close together on shelves. Line up fiction books, such as novels, science fiction, poetry or short stories, and then nonfiction books, which include biographies, sports, gardening and cooking. College textbooks can go together. Children's books can be stored on lower shelves within easy reach.

    Location

    • Place regularly used books near the area where they are used most often. Put reference materials needed for writing and research, such as a dictionary, thesaurus, style guide or encyclopedias near a desk. Keep any books used to learn new technology skills, such as for software programs or typing, close to the computer.

    Size

    • Stack over-sized coffee table books together on the floor from largest to smallest. This provides a decorative way to save space. Facing spines outward keeps the titles visible for speedy book retrieval. However, avoid stacking books if children or pets occupy your living space to prevent possible injury.

    Stylishness

    • Display unique books, such as those with distinctive, textured or colorful covers on space saving floating shelves. Your books then become wall art, while remaining handy for reading.

    Dimensions

    • Books with similar dimensions can function as end tables or nightstands. Just stack the books near seating areas or beds and drape with a decorative cloth to protect the books from spills or dents. Books may also be arranged by height. Line them up tallest to smallest, as if making a right triangle.
