Oral Steroids & Side Effects

Oral steroids are used to treat many medical conditions, including asthma, severe allergic reactions, lupus, inflammation, immunity problems and skin rashes, and they can help heal certain injuries. The potential for side effects always exists when taking medication, and oral steroids are no exception.

  1. Eyes

    • Some people experience oral-steroid side effects with problems in the eyes. Glaucoma (an elevation of eye pressure) and cataracts are both possible.

    Weight

    • One of the most common side effects with this type of medication is weight gain from having fatty deposits settle in the face or abdomen. Some people also experience fluid retention in the lower leg area, which would also make the weight fluctuate.

    Mental and Emotional

    • Mood swings, sometimes quite severe, can be a side effect for some people taking oral steroids.

    Blood

    • Some people experience an increase in their blood pressure, and women may have menstrual problems or become irregular. Bleeding under the skin, causing easier bruising, is also possible.

    Bones

    • Oral steroids may cause some loss of calcium, which may result in breaking or fracturing bones, and eventually result in osteoporosis.

    Other

    • Taking oral steroids presents an increased risk of infections as a side effect. There is also an increased risk of having blood-sugar elevations, which may result in causing or worsening diabetes for some people.
