Dog Sled Information

Dog sled racing can be pursued as a sport or a hobby. Either way, you do not get to do much riding on the runners; vigorous physical activity is involved and adventure is as close as your local trail.

  1. Homemade

    • Build your own sled from natural materials if you want the true old-time feel of this sport. Plans are available and the actual construction takes little more than basic carpentry skills.

    Professional

    • Contemporary sleds are made with lightweight materials, such as aluminum, in combination with traditional woods. Racing sleds are built strong, with a minimum of materials to reduce weight; some can be found with carbon fiber runners (the skids the sled rides on).

    Freight

    • Sleds made for hauling are built with a lower seat or no seat included. These sleds can haul multiple people or supplies.

    Custom

    • Custom sleds can be built to fulfill unusual needs and personal measurements. Most popular variations include extra seating or tailored cargo space for carrying specific loads.

    Accessories

    • Covered cargo areas increase visibility, decrease wind resistance and protect gear. Foot boards can be added to increase the traction available to keep the driver firmly in control.
