Information on the Myna Bird

The myna, or mynah, is part of the Sturnidae family of birds that also includes the European starling. Its diet is berries and insects. The myna is an Asian bird that has infiltrated the United States and Australia. The myna can survive in suburban areas, and often competes with woodpeckers for nest sites in tree or building cavities.

History

Although native to India, the myna was introduced to Australia in 1862 to help curb insect pests, and introduced to Hawaii in 1865. The Global Invasive Species Database currently lists the myna in the top 100 worst invaders in the world.

Types

The Hill Myna is found in Florida and California. The Common Myna is found in southern Florida. The Crested Myna is found in British Columbia.

Features

The Hill Myna is the familiar talking myna that also whistles, squawks and chirps. The Common Myna and the Crested Myna produce chatter and musical phrases.

Size

The Hill Myna, Common Myna and Crested Myna are approximately 10 inches long, with a wing span of between 18 and 20 inches; they weigh between 4 and 7 oz.

Considerations

If you are looking for a pet bird that can mimic human speech, the Greater Indian Hill Mynah and the Java Hill Mynah can be kept as pets.

Fun Fact

In India, mynas are a symbol of everlasting love since they often mate for life.
