For most of the computer age, Microsoft had the dominant web browser, Internet Explorer. Netscape had been the alternative until it was discontinued. Today there are a number of alternatives to Internet Explorer. Here are five of the most popular (at the time of writing); the ideal one for you depends on your use and application.

    Firefox

  1. This browser is from Mozilla and is the successor to the old Netscape browser. This browser is best known as an alternative for Internet Explorer for PCs.
  2. Chrome

  3. This is Google's answer to Microsoft Internet Explorer. This alternative browser has the advantage of allowing users to surf the web without saving their history, which effectively "hides" the user.
  4. Flock

  5. This browser is set up to take full advantage of social networking and the sites that support it. Flock can let users combine their social networking sites onto one overlay and work directly from the browser.
  6. Safari

  7. This is Apple's alternative to Microsoft Internet Explorer. You can get this browser with iPods, iTunes and, of course, Mac and Apple computers..
  8. Opera

  9. This is the browser used for the Nintendo Wii game system. This alternative browser is used when gamers go online to compete and update software. It is also the browser used for mobile phones.
