Famous Paintings From Spain
A famous Spanish painter once said, "Painting is just another way of keeping a diary." That painter was Pablo Picasso. Picasso's works, like many of his Spanish predecessors, are well known throughout the world for their beauty, their unique presentation, and their ability to retain a piece of history through art.

History
-
Diego Velasquez cleverly sketched himself into history in his piece, "The Maids of Honour." In this portrait of a young Spanish princess, her attendants, and her parents (the king & queen), Velasquez paints himself into the painting as a painter painting the scene as it happens. Confusing, yes.
Significance
Time Frame
-
A painting of disabled children swimming at the beach titled "Sad Inheritance" won Joaquin Sorolla great fame throughout Europe in the early twentieth century. At that time, paintings were generally less socially aware of any class but the upper class.
Features
-
Pablo Picasso went through a "cubist" phase. This include his work "The Dream," which features unusual shapes, colors, and forms to create a woman tilting her head sideways while dreaming. The textbook approach to symmetry is completely absent in this painting.
Considerations
-
Francisco de Goya painted the well-known mythological (and considerably dark) portrayal of "Saturn Devouring His Son" after a long period of personal physical illness.
