Prenatal massage during pregnancy can be a great relaxation technique for pregnant women. In addition, it can relieve some of the aches and pains that are associated with pregnancy.

    Avoid First Trimester

  1. While there is no research to show that prenatal massages cause harm in the first trimester, most therapists will not provide massages due to the increased chance of miscarriage in the first trimester.
  2. Find a Certified Therapist

  3. It is important to find a massage therapist who is certified in prenatal massage. Massage in pregnancy differs from regular massage as certain areas of the body should be avoided. Certified prenatal massage therapists also will be trained in relieving some of the most common pregnancy symptoms.
  4. Assume the Correct Position

  5. During the massage, the therapist will either provide a table with a hole cut out for your belly or will use a normal massage table using pillows for support as you lie on your side.
  6. Avoid Pressure Points

  7. There are pressure points in the wrists and ankles that can trigger contractions. A trained prenatal massage therapist will know to avoid these pressure points during the massage. If contractions begin at any time during the massage, notify the therapist immediately.
  8. Reap the Benefits

  9. According to the American Pregnancy Association, benefits of prenatal massage include regulation of hormone levels, reduction in pain, reduction of swelling, improved sleep patterns and improved circulation.
