How Often Can a Dog Be Bathed?
Sooner or later, your dog will need a bath. Some basic things to keep in mind when washing a dog include its skin condition, overall health and grooming habits.
-
Why Dogs Smell
-
Dogs produce oils that spread through their coats. These oils carry with them a specific scent that identifies your dog. They are also essential to a dog's health, and bathing a dog too often can strip these oils.
How Often to Bathe
-
Once a month is the maximum bathing frequency recommended for most dogs, and dogs with a double coat may only need to be bathed three or four times a year.
-
Shampoo and Conditioner
-
Use shampoo and conditioner formulated for dogs, not humans. The pH level of a dog's skin is different from a person's, so the use of human products can lead to dry, itchy skin.
When to Brush Instead
-
Remove mud from your dog's coat with a brush instead of bathing it. A good amount of dust and dirt will be cleaned out. Always groom a dog before bathing it to prevent matted fur and to encourage even distribution of oils.
Preventing Dry Skin
-
Bathing often leads to dry skin. If the skin seems excessively dry, flaky or scaly, consult a veterinarian.
