Senokot is an over-the-counter stimulant laxative containing the active ingredient senna, which triggers contractions of the intestinal muscles. According to the Mayo Clinic, stimulant laxatives are the harshest types and should not be used long-term. Several side effects are possible.

    Most Common Effects

  1. The most common side effects associated with Senokot include abdominal cramping, bloating, diarrhea, lightheadedness, nausea and vomiting. If any of these effects persist, a doctor should be consulted.
  2. Urine Discoloration

  3. Taking products containing senna may turn the urine red or yellow-brown. This is a harmless side effect.
  4. Serious Side Effects

  5. More serious side effects include bloody stools, dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, rectal bleeding, sweating and weakness.
  6. Laxative Dependency

  7. When used for an extended time frame, Senokot can create dependency, and the person may be continuously constipated without using laxatives.
  8. Allergic Reaction

  9. Although very unlikely, Senokot can cause an allergic reaction. Signs are rash or hives, itching, swelling of the face or throat, severe dizziness and difficulty breathing.
