Blade servers differ from conventional rack-mounted servers because most traditional features (power supply, hard drive, networking, etc.) are removed, reducing the power requirements while expanding the number of potential servers.

  1. Blade History

    • The first blade server was created around 2001 by two former Compaq Computer employees, Christopher Hipp and David Kirkeby. Hewlett-Packard and IBM now lead in blade sales.

    Blade Benefits

    • Historically, rack-mounted servers were akin to separate computers, each requiring individual cooling and maintenance resources. Blades require fewer resources and permit flexible expansion.

    Typical Uses

    • Blade servers are ideal for applications that must quickly scale on demand. Because a single blade can be added, the servers are often used in Web hosting or cloud computing.

    Blade Enclosure

    • Because a blade server omits many typical components, it is housed in a blade enclosure that provides power, networking and storage capability.

    Server Density

    • Unlike rack-mounted servers, which often are 42 servers high, a blade system (blade plus enclosure) can hold about 128 individual blade servers. An enclosure includes power, storage and other components.
