Information About a Jaguar

The jaguar is considered one of the four "big cats," and can roar along with the lion, the tiger and the leopard. This sets it apart from the other species of felines in the world. The jaguar is similar in appearance to a leopard, but is heavier and has differently shaped spots.

  1. Geography

    • At one time, the jaguar's range was from the southwestern United States all the way down to the very tip of South America. It now inhabits mostly northern and central South America and parts of Central America.

    • The jaguar is at home in the water. It is an excellent swimmer and can also skillfully climb trees.

    Size

    • Adult males can weigh up to 300 lbs. but average about 100. Jaguars can be as long as six feet and are the largest cats in the Americas.

    Hunting

    • The jaguar is powerful enough to kill caimans and tapirs, as well as quick enough to kill monkeys and catch fish. It can pierce the skull of its prey with its incredibly strong jaws and sharp teeth.

    Vision

    • The eye of the jaguar has a special structure in the rear that acts like a mirror. This allows the jaguar to have excellent vision at night, when it hunts.
