Explanation of Hybrid Cars

Hybrid cars have been gaining in popularity due because of better fuel economy and decreased environmental harm they cause. Nearly all car manufacturers are making or planning to make a hybrid car. Hybrids are a combination of a gasoline-powered and an electric car.

  1. Gas Mileage

    • Because hybrid cars do not use gasoline constantly, they have better gas mileage than a gasoline car. For example, a 2010 Ford Fusion Automatic S Model has an EPA of 23 city and 34 highway; a 2010 Ford Fusion hybrid has an EPA of 41 city and 36 highway.

    Environmental Impact

    • Hybrid cars have lower emissions than gasoline-powered cars, which means fewer greenhouse gases and a better environment.

    Process

    • The hybrid car works by combining an electric motor powered by batteries with an internal combustion engine. The electric motor helps the engine operate more efficiently, and the battery provides energy when the car is idling. Energy created by braking is stored in the battery for later use.

    Disadvantages

    • Some disadvantages of owning a hybrid car are a higher purchase price, lower acceleration and higher repair costs.

    Makers

    • The makers of hybrid cars available in 2009 or 2010 are Ford, Toyota, Cadillac, GMC, Hyundai, Honda, Mercury, Lexus, Nissan, Chevrolet, Dodge, Saturn, Porsche, Volkswagen, Mercedes, Saab, Audi and Volvo.
