The Start of Feta
- Feta cheese has an incredibly long history that goes back for thousands of years. Feta is a Greek cheese that was mentioned in Homer's "Odyssey," which is believed to have been written around the eighth century BC.
The Name
- Feta translates roughly to "slice" in Italian. It was named as such in the 17th century because it was sliced when packed into barrels.
The Myth
- According to Experience Festival, the myth surrounding feta cheese names Cyclops Polyphemus as "the first cheese manufacturer." It is said that he carried sheep milk in an animal skin bag, only to find that it had become solid days later.
