Medications for Fibromyalgia Pain
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain, fatigue, sleep problems and often depression. It is believed to be triggered by an abnormal response in nerve cells, but its cause has not been discovered. Medications for fibromyalgia can help to treat the symptoms.

Analgesics
-
Pain is the main symptom in fibromyalgia and analgesics are painkillers. Depending on the severity of pain, the use of analgesics for fibromyalgia range from over-the-counter Tylenol to tramadol, codeine and morphine.
Anti-inflammatories
-
Ibuprofen and naproxen are available in prescription and non-prescription strengths and are used for fibromyalgia. Celebrex is a Cox-II anti-inflammatory that is prescribed to treat pain and cause less stomach upset.
-
Antidepressants
-
Antidepressants are used for those with fibromyalgia not just to treat depression but to help ease pain. Cymbalta (duloxetine) in particular has been shown to be a helpful antidepressant for fibromyalgia.
Muscle Relaxants
-
Muscle relaxers, particularly Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine), are medications used for fibromyalgia to ease muscle pain and to help restore restful sleep.
Lyrica
-
Pregablin, sold as Lyrica, was the first medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration to specifically treat fibromyalgia. It is used for nerve pain and it works by calming the nerve cells that are overactive in fibromyalgia patients.
Mirapex
-
Mirapex (pramipexole) is a dopamine receptor agonist that has been used by patients with Parkinson's diseases, and it has been helpful for some fibromyalgia sufferers.
