Revolutionary War Costume Ideas
The Revolutionary War is a wonderful theme for costume parties or Halloween. It makes for a fun dress-up time for a couple or a group of people. Some examples of famous people that can be portrayed are Benjamin Franklin, General George Washington and Molly Pitcher. There are a number of similar features about many of the costumes of the era, however, certain attributes are specific to Minutemen and redcoats.
-
General Washington
-
The most famous person in the Revolutionary War makes for a great costume idea. General Washington generally wore gray pants with black boots, a white button-down undershirt and a blue overcoat. His head was adorned with a white wig and tricorne hat. Add a sword, cape and wooden teeth to complete the costume.
Benjamin Franklin
-
One of the fathers of the Revolution makes for a great costume idea. Benjamin Franklin wore standard gentleman outfit with an undershirt, overcoat and short pants. Stockings and buckled shoes are commonplace. To complete the costume, a bald cap with long gray hair is necessary, as is is bifocals and a pocket watch.

Molly Pitcher
-
Based on the general concept of a standard woman's dress of the era, a Molly Pitcher outfit would contain a slip, stockings and a cap on the first layer. This is covered by a item similar to a bodice called a stay and petticoats. The wearer then covers this with a dress and possibly a cloak. Complete the costume with a bucket and cannon rod.
Minuteman
-
The traditional Minuteman costume is based on a regular colonist's outfit with the addition of a gun. A Revolutionary War costume idea for this would include an undershirt and stockings as the first layer, covered by a waistcoat and trousers. This gets covered with a frock and a pouch as well as any type of colonial hat.
Red Coat
-
A British redcoat uniform has white pants, a black button down coat and belt. The whole outfit is topped off with a red waist-coat and tricorne hat. Other additions to costume can include a white wig, sword and musket.
