Depo Provera is a female birth control method that contains synthetic progestin and stops ovulation by thickening cervical mucus to prevent pregnancy. Usage of Depo Provera may cause undesirable long-term effects; the seriousness of these effects increases the longer Depo Provera is used.

    Time Frame

  1. A single shot of Depo Provera provides three months of contraceptive protection. Because of long-term effects, Depo Provera should not be used for longer than two years at a time.
  2. Amenorrhea

  3. Irregular menstruation is common while taking Depo Provera; some women do not receive a period at all. Amenorrhea is most common if Depo Provera is used for longer than one year.
  4. Bone Density

  5. Depo Provera may cause significant loss of bone density, increasing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Bone density loss associated with Depo Provera is usually irreversible.
  6. Future Fertility

  7. After stopping use of Depo Provera, it may take up to a year for fertility to return; for some women, fertility may return quickly, but most experience at least some delay.
  8. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

  9. There is much speculation, but little scientific proof, that there may be a connection between Depo Provera use and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a condition which causes ovarian cysts, high blood pressure and infertility.
