In the United States, public places like hospitals and airplanes formerly allowed smoking. However, in the 21st century, tobacco smoking bans are being drafted into law by local governments across the country. The following facts reveal some of the reasons for this shift in policy and social norms.

    Yearly Deaths

  1. According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco causes about 20 percent of deaths every year in America. Furthermore, the CDC lists tobacco use as the No. 1 preventable cause of all deaths in the United States.
  2. Number of Tobacco Smokers

  3. According to the American Cancer society, in 2006, about one in five Americans smoked tobacco.
  4. Ingredients of Cigarette Smoke

  5. According to TheTruth.com, cigarette smoke has 11 elements that cause cancer. Some include formaldehyde (used to preserve dead bodies) and acetone (used in nail polish remover).
  6. No Safe Tobacco Use

  7. There is no safe way to use tobacco. Cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, cigars and all other tobacco products are unhealthy to use.
  8. Why Cigarettes Are Addictive

  9. The part of a cigarette that makes it addictive is nicotine, but this ingredient is not what causes cancer. Frequent tobacco users feel relaxed after smoking due to the effects of nicotine.
