Can I Cover Up a Scar With Makeup?

We all have imperfections we want to hide. Most are minor nuisances: freckles, acne scars, red marks. If you've been injured or have a permanent mark or scar that causes you embarrassment or affects your confidence, it's natural to want to cover it. The good news is that you can cover up a scar with makeup. Read on for the best cover tips in the business. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. What to Use

    • For covering scars, regular foundation or concealer won't do. You need a special, waterproof product with opaque pigments (colors) matched to your skin tone. There are several makers of this kind of product: CoverMark, DermaBlend, Colortration and DermaColor (by Kryolan). These will all give you opaque waterproof coverage. The only real differences are in price and number of shade choices. Covermark has the widest range (16) of shades, DermaBlend, Colortration and DermaColor have a range of six to eight shades.

    When to Use It

    • There are times when the need to cover your scar is obvious: special celebrations, having a photo taken, job interview or first date. However, try to keep in mind that your scar is a part of you and your life experience. Covering your scar every day can be a denial of your whole self, so try to have times when you let those close to you see the real you, in all of your lovely imperfection.

    Color Matching

    • The secret to getting really good makeup coverage for your scar is matching the product to your skin tone. If you can't find a perfect match, you might need to blend two colors. Most product lines offer a sampler of up to six colors so you can do this. Also, if you have a very dark mark, such as a burn or port-wine birthmark, most lines offer a white primer or base that is applied before the color makeup.

    Tips

    • Sun protection is important to keep scars from darkening. Look for coverage products that also include a sunscreen of at least 30 SPF.

If you want to try to minimize your scar, there are products (mederma.com) that can help. These are applied every day and take about four weeks to change the appearance of a scar.

To make your makeup coverage last longer, apply a setting powder over color makeup. Many lines carry this.

    About Tattoos

    • Though not technically a scar, there are times when you might find it necessary to hide a tattoo. The technique for this is basically the same as scar coverage, but some product lines (Colortration) have special kits for covering tattoos.
