What is an Alternative to Adobe Pagemaker?

Adobe Pagemaker, once known as Aldus Pagemaker, is a desktop publishing program that integrates text and graphics for newsletters and other publications. Pagemaker was discontinued in 2001, leaving version 7.0 as the the last release.

Adobe InDesign

This modern desktop publishing product is Adobe's official replacement for Pagemaker. It has all the features of Pagemaker, plus added features for online design, interactive PDF publications and Adobe Flash integration.

Microsoft Publisher

Publisher is Microsoft's product for desktop publishers, available for Windows only. Like InDesign, Publisher can create documents for print or web and comes with a library of templates to simplify the design process.

Microsoft Word

This leading word processor application has multiple features and templates to help with desktop publishing. It can create columns, add tables and pictures, and draw custom graphics through its WordArt and SmartArt functions.

Apple iWork Pages

Although not as advanced as MSWord in some word processing aspects, Apple's Pages program for Macintosh users has strong layout tools. It includes several built-in templates for common desktop publishing designs like newsletters and brochures.

HTML and CSS

For online design, HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) offer the designer layout control similar to Pagemaker. HTML/CSS also can add interactivity to online publications through the use of links and web programming.
