Men need hair products, too. In an increasingly competitive world, you need to look your best at work and at play. Gone are the days of borrowing your girlfriend's shampoo. There are lots of complete hair product lines made just for you. Learn what to choose and how to use it. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Just The Facts

    • Hair products come in three basic kinds: shampoo, conditioner and styling products. Styling products come in four different preparations: mousse (like shaving cream), gel (clear liquid applied in the hand), paste (also called wax or pomade) and hairspray.

    How to Use Them

    • Look Good at Work

This is the simple part; read the instructions on the container. They will tell you everything you need to know. How much to use (pea-size, dime-size or quarter-size amount), when to apply (damp or dry hair) and what type of effect you'll get (spiky, soft, clean or messy).

    The Sniff Test

    • Most hair products for men come in scented form (americancrew.com, gillette.com), and this is mostly for the women, not for you. If you are allergic or want unscented products, check the label. The front will say something like "fresh urban power blast" or "original scent." If you really want to be sure, read the ingredient list on the back and look for the word "fragrance." See tips below for more fragrance guidelines.

    For Long Hair

    • If you have long hair, the most important thing is to keep it very clean and well-conditioned. You will need a good shampoo and conditioner and a styling product that gives "light" or "soft" hold (axe.com). Mousse is a good option, but it contains alcohol and can be drying.

    Tips

    • If you work in a corporate or creative environment, go for scented products. If you are allergic to fragrance, live with someone who is, or work in the medical or scientific field, stick to unscented.

If you use styling products every day, they will build up on your hair. Use a clarifying shampoo (Suave has a good, cheap one) once a week to get rid of buildup.
