About Puppy Reactions to Vaccinations

Puppies must have vaccinations in order to keep them healthy. However, like humans, it is possible for a puppy to have an adverse reaction to a vaccination. Keep a close eye on your puppy following a vaccination to be certain that it does not suffer a reaction.

Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a rare--though severe--reaction to a vaccine. This reaction will happen almost immediately and can send your puppy into cardiac arrest, respiratory failure or shock.

Neurological Reactions

Neurological reactions are the most common reactions to puppy and dog vaccines. Canine distemper vaccination is the most likely one to cause neurological problems in a puppy.

Fever and Decreased Appetite

A puppy vaccine can cause fever, lack of appetite and lack of energy. This should subside within 24 hours. If symptoms worsen or last longer than a day, contact your veterinarian.

Drowsiness

A puppy may become drowsy and sleep more for the 24 to 48 hours following the vaccine. The puppy should still be drinking water, and may or may not be eating. If the puppy will not drink water, call your vet for advice.

Hives and Swelling

Hives and swelling are rare reactions. They can happen on the dog's face, or at and near the injection site. If your puppy has this type of reaction, let the veterinarian know so that next time the puppy can be given an antihistamine at the time of vaccinations.
