What Kind of Equipment Is Used to Whitewater Raft?

Whitewater rafting has developed from a leisure sport to one that can be highly competitive as rafters are challenged by different classes of whitewater. Make sure you have the necessary tools and equipment, and know where everything is in your raft. Rafting requires a safe raft, appropriate clothing and accessories to have a fun and safe trip.

  1. Rafts

    • The raft consists of fabrics and air chambers covered with urethane, neoprene or another high-strength coating that reduces damage to the raft. The basic raft size is 11 to 20 feet in length 6 to 8 feet in width. These sizes are primarily for group rafting, but there are lightweight rafts available for one person.

    Oars

    • Consider different types of oars before a whitewater rafting trip, and consider how their weight and how each one feels before purchase.

    Safety Equipment for Whitewater Rafting

    • Safety and rescue equipment such as a first aid kit, rope, knives and throw bags are essential tools that can reduce risk. Throw bags are a critical piece of equipment that can be used to help a swimmer or another boat. Wearing a life jacket and shatterproof helmet reduces the risk of injury if you go overboard.

    Repair Kits

    • It is important to bring a repair kit and extra parts, especially for a longer trip or if you are not using an outfitting service where it would supply all equipment. Be sure to include an air pump that is easy to store and reliable, as well as a bail bucket should you need to scoop out water from the raft.

    Clothing

    • Do not wear clothes such as jeans or sweats because they tend to retain water. Wearing insulated material such as a wetsuit can help you stay warm. Be sure to include dry bags when you are packing for an overnight trip.
