Triam HCTZ Side Effects

The combination medication hydrochlorothiazide and triamterene, often called triam HCTZ or triamterene HCTZ, contains two diuretics that allow your body to eliminate excess water through urine. Available in generic form and under the brand names Dyazide and Maxzide, doctors prescribe triam HCTZ to treat high blood pressure and edema, and for people at risk of hypokalemia (low potassium levels). Numerous side effects are possible.

  1. Gastrointestinal Side Effects

    • Triam HCTZ can cause gastrointestinal side effects. These include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and constipation or diarrhea.

    Other Side Effects

    • Additional side effects include anxiety, depression, drowsiness, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, insomnia, headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, restlessness, sensitivity to sunlight, thirst, vision changes and weakness.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Serious side effects that call for medical attention include abnormally low blood pressure, rapid heart rate, irregular heartbeat, kidney stones, high blood sugar, liver problems and worsening of gout.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Rarely, some people have an allergic reaction to this medication. Signs are rash or hives, itching, facial or mouth swelling, difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing.

    • Triam HCTZ can raise potassium levels, most frequently in people with kidney disease or diabetes, or elderly people with a serious illness. Anyone taking triam HCTZ should have her potassium levels checked regularly.
