Neurontin and Side Effects

Neurontin is an anticonvulsant medication prescribed to treat epileptic disorders. It is sold generically as gabapentin. Neurontin is also used to reduce nerve pain.

  1. Mood

    • Some patients have had suicidal thoughts while taking Neurontin. Within the first three months of taking this drug, your doctor will schedule follow-up visits to track the medication's effect on your moods and behavior.

    During Pregnancy

    • Neurontin is an FDA Category C medication, meaning it may cause complications to an unborn fetus. Neurontin can pass through to the breast milk and affect your baby. The FDA suggests taking this drug only if its benefits exceed its risks.

    Central Nervous System

    • Neurontin has been known to impair vision, affect reaction time and limit alertness. The degrees to which individuals are affected differ from person to person.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Individuals with allergies to gabapentin should not take Neurontin. The side effects can include hives, dizziness, difficulty breathing and swelling of the lips, tongue and throat.

    For Children

    • For children under the age of 12 who have side effects when taking Neurontin, the most common complaints are behavior disturbances, problems with memory and concentration. Children may become hostile, angry and less attentive when taking this medication.
