Ideas for Sloping Backyards

Sloping backyards present a logistical problem to the backyard landscaper. Dealing with a sloping backyard creatively can transform a difficult space into a unique garden, entertainment space or focal point for a home. There are many different ways to turn a landscaping handicap like a sloping backyard into a huge landscape positive.

    Level a Sloping Backyard

  1. Use a retaining wall to create a level space in a backyard that slopes away from the house. Building a retaining wall up to a yard high is a fairly challenging project, but doable for an experienced DIY builder.
  2. Terraced Yards

  3. A traditional way to deal with a sloping backyard is to build terraces along the slope. A terraced slope makes it easier to landscape the yard attractively.
  4. Raised Decks

  5. Raised decks can be designed to provide a scenic overlook for a sloping backyard allowed to grow au naturel. Wooden stairs provide access to the backyard for maintenance.
  6. Rock Gardens

  7. A sloping backyard is an ideal setting for a well-built rock garden. Planting native plants can help reduce run-off and erosion.
  8. Paths on Sloping Backyards

  9. Build access paths across the slope to provide access to gardening installations on higher ground. Paths that run down the slope can easily become gullies.
  10. Utiltities

  11. Check with utility companies before doing any digging or excavation to avoid disturbing utility lines or pipes.
