What Are the Treatments for Diarrhea?

Diarrhea often occurs as a result of a virus, food poisoning or a reaction to certain medications. Diarrhea generally only requires home treatments. However, a doctor should be consulted if diarrhea continues for more than a week, if blood is passed with the diarrhea or if dehydration is suspected.

  1. Anti-Diarrheal Medications

    • Anti-Diarrheal medications such as Imodium AD may be used to temporarily treat diarrhea.

    Drink Clear Liquids

    • While experiencing diarrhea, clear liquids such as water, juices and broths should be consumed regularly. Do not drink pear or apple juice, though, because they may make the diarrhea even worse.

    Prescription Medications

    • A doctor may prescribe antibiotics if he/she determines that the diarrhea is bacterial in nature.

    Eat Carefully

    • It is recommended solid foods be introduced back into the diet slowly. Good choices to begin with include crackers, toast, rice, chicken and eggs.

    Avoid Bothersome Foods

    • Some foods tend to make diarrhea worse. Avoid eating greasy foods, spicy foods and dairy products for several days after the onset of symptoms.
