Requirements for Immigration to Israel

Immigration to Israel can be an overwhelming experience. Approach it methodically, completing each step before moving on to the next one.

Basic Requirements

Israeli law permits anyone who is Jewish from anywhere in the world to immigrate and receive citizenship. Prospective olim (the Hebrew term for Jewish immigrants) must apply for aliyah status and receive an immigrant visa from the nearest Israeli consulate office.

Aliyah Visa Application

Applications are available at any Israeli consulate office. The Jewish Agency for Israel offers the application form online. The Nefesh b'Nefesh organization can assist U.S. and Canadian citizens in the application process.

Document Eligibility

Olim need to document eligibility for aliyah. Two forms of documentation will meet this requirement: a ketubah (the Jewish marriage contract) or a valid conversion certificate. Singles who were born Jewish can use their parents' ketubah. The Jewish agency and Nefesh b'Nefesh can guide applicants through this process.

Receive an Oleh Visa

After approval, the applicant must send his passport to the nearest Israeli consulate office to receive the oleh visa. Make sure the passport is valid and updated; oleh visas are only issued if the applicant's passport will remain valid for six months after the planned date of aliyah.

Arrange a Flight

The Israeli consulate and the Nefesh b'Nefesh organization will assist olim in making flight arrangements. The cost of an oleh's ticket is subsidized.
