Piracetam is a European prescription drug used to help patients with mental impairment as a result of a stroke or alcohol abuse. In the United States, it is primarily used as a nootropic ("smart drug").

    Do I Need a Prescription for Piracetam?

  1. In the United States, piracetam does not require a prescription. It is classified as a dietary supplement, and as such, it is all but unregulated.
  2. Will Piracetam Make Me Smarter?

  3. Anecdotal evidence seems to indicate that piracetam has a subtle positive effect on concentration for some people, but no research has been done to confirm this.
  4. Does Piracetam Help Children With Learning Disabilities?

  5. Studies indicate that piracetam may benefit children with dyslexia. Similar studies performed on children with Down Syndrome show no improvement and an increase in behavioral problems.
  6. Is Piracetam Safe?

  7. Piracetam appears to be quite safe for adults, though some patients report drowsiness and diarrhea. The safety of this drug has not been studied in children, and there is some concern that it may impact brain development.
  8. What Is the Dosage for Piracetam?

  9. The typical adult dose for piracetam is 1,600mg taken three times a day for the first few weeks, then 800mg three times a day. Piracetam should only be given to children under a doctor's supervision.
