The Side Effects of Tramadol HCL

Tramadol hydrochloride (Hcl) is a prescription pain relief medication sold under the brand names Ultram and Ryzolt. It is available in regular tablets as well as extended release for people who need continuous pain medication for long periods of time. Many side effects are possible.

Most Common Effects

In clinical studies with tramadol Hcl, as detailed by eMedTV, constipation and nausea occurred in nearly half the participants of some studies. Dizziness, headaches and drowsiness also were common.

Other Side Effects

Side effects occurring in between 1 to 14 percent of participants included agitation, changes in urination, diarrhea, dry mouth, euphoria, hot flashes, increased perspiration, heartburn, indigestion, itching, nervousness, shakiness, vision problems and weakness.

Serious Side Effects

Serious side effects are rare but possible when taking tramadol Hcl. These include chest pain, confusion or disorientation, rapid heart rate, hallucinations, seizures, tingling in the feet or hands and sores in the mouth, nose, eyes or throat.

Allergic Reaction

Also rarely, some people may experience an allergic reaction to tramadol Hcl. Signs are rash or hives, swelling, severe dizziness, hoarseness and difficulty breathing.

Withdrawal

Tramadol is habit-forming and has significant potential for abuse. Patients should not stop using the drug suddenly after an extended period of time or withdrawal symptoms can occur. These include anxiety, sweating, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and tremors.
