The Average Salary of a Paraeducator

Paraeducators, or teaching assistants, help lead teachers with the day-to-day functions of a classroom, including assisting students that need extra help and supervising activities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts the field of education will grow by 10 percent through 2016, resulting in the creation of 137,000 paraeducator jobs.

    • In 2008, the highest-paying employers of paraeducators were specialty hospitals, colleges and universities, junior colleges, substance-abuse and psychiatric hospitals, and educational support services. Paraeducators working in these fields averaged $26,170 to $30,080.

    • In May 2008, the states with the highest-paid paraeducators were Alaska, California, Delaware, Washington and Connecticut, where workers received average incomes of $28,210 to $33,370.
